Anniversary Weekend: Local Tourists

November 2 marks our 12th wedding anniversary. Some years we've been able to celebrate by taking a little trip to someplace nearby, going out to a nice dinner in DC, or on a couple of wonderful occasions, taking a two week trip to France. This year, we're going to reach back to one from our younger, less economically able days:  Local Tourism.

When you're consumed by work, errands, chores, laundry, various social obligations and life, it's easy to forget that we live in a great city. One that has great art, monuments, museums and of course great places to eat and drink. Why go away when you've got so much here that you don't have time to appreciate?

So this year, we're going to take our anniversary weekend to appreciate what Washington DC has to offer. We're not going to do chores, we're not working and we're not going to any of the usual places we go for food and drink. We're going to check out museums, eat great food, tromp around the city like we used to back when we were younger, and enjoy a weekend together.

And we've got a pretty good lineup already in store. Tomorrow night, we signed up for a Living Social cooking class focusing on bacon. What says romance more than bacon? Saturday, we might end up at the Smithsonian for the exhibit on food. We also took a flyer and got lucky -- Patti called the notoriously hard to get into, award-winning restaurant Komi (where you usually have to call exactly one month in advance and keep dialing like you're trying to win an on-air radio contest until you get through). It just so happened they had room for two on Saturday at 9:15. Sunday, we'll stay home and cook a French beef stew that uses chocolate for extra depth and flavor. It's a Matt and Patti tradition -- we've even cooked it in France.

Beyond that, we're just going to explore DC. I've got a few ideas, and I'm sure Patti does too. If we end up doing anything fun, we'll blog about it.
