Headed to the Blue Ridge

Been a couple weeks since the last post, but a business trip, a heavy workload and a (much needed) slow weekend will cramp the Gastonomical adventures. This weekend, on the other hand, we've got a little getaway going down. We found a Living Social (Or was it Groupon?) deal for a dog-friendly B&B down in Nelson County, VA, just southwest of Charlottesville.

Nelson County is a pleasant little corner of the world and has become a favorite weekend spot of ours in Virginia. We've taken our annual Fourth of July camping trip at nearby Sherando Lake several times, as well as weekends like this. It hugs the Blue Ridge down south of Shenandoah National Park along the George Washington National Forest. The mountain scenery is spectacular. AND, there's quite a bit to eat and drink down there.

Charlottesville is just a hop and a jump away, though we usually like to make that a separate trip -- there's plenty to keep us entertained out in the country in and around Nelson County. Most of the main stops are arrayed along Virginia Route 151 which runs through the Rockfish Valley.

There are several breweries in the area, including Devil's Backbone's Basecamp brewery and restaurant, Blue Mountain Brewhouse (which also has a restaurant), Wild Wolf (ditto) and Starr Hill's only a few miles away in Crozet. There are also numerous wineries that are well-established, including Veritas, Afton Mountain, Cardinal Point, King Family, Pollack and others, plus some cideries nearby as well.

In short, it's a great little mid-winter, long-weekend, Gastonomical getaway. We'll probably be visiting most of the above-mentioned places, as well as a few others we encounter during the three-hour drive down there through what I'm hoping will be some beautiful snow-covered countryside.
